Alternative Raw Materials Use in Construction Sector:
Legal / Regulatory Issues

This stream will explore the legal/regulatory impediments which frustrate the potential use of alternative raw materials (ARM's) in the manufacture of cement and concrete, a key issue identified by the Cement Industry Action Agenda (CIAA).

Objective: To identify pathways for government and industry actions that can lead to the removal of legal or regulatory barriers for utilisation, thus increasing the uptake of alternative raw materials and supplementary cementitious materials such as iron and steel slags.

Aims for the Workshop:

  • Define jurisdictional approaches towards sustainable resource management.
  • Collate views from jurisdictions on appropriate methods to approving the use of by-products or waste products of other industrial, agricultural or municipal processes.
  • Identify how government and industry can better manage by-product resource streams.

Objective: To outline appropriate design procedures for the use of slag pavements and address concerns identified in the construction and maintenance of slag pavements.

The benefits of slag pavement material over natural resources and other recycled material will also be discussed, with a focus on WOLC and sustainability.

Aims for the Workshop:

  • Identify appropriate design procedures.
  • Provide examples of appropriate and inappropriate uses of slag pavement materials.
  • Address some of the myths surrounding slag pavement materials.
  • Provide examples of user experiences and any difficulties encountered.
  • Provide a forum for discussion of issues related to slag pavement construction for designers, contractors and asset owners/ managers.
