connectionsFigure1-DunmoreFigure2-KiamaByPassFigure3-TheNorthernDistributorFigure4-PortKemblaSteelWorkswww.asa-inc.org.au04APRIL11SlagRoadbasecasestudiesSLAGINSIDERAirportRunwaysHighwaysandFreewaysCouncilLocallyTrafckedRoadsDuringtheplanningofSydneyAirports3rdrunwayASMSproposedaslagblendconsistingof80ABFSand20GBFSbyvolumeasasub-baseforrunwayconstruction.ThisblendhadalreadyexhibitedexcellenteldperformanceandfollowingextensivetrialsandadditionaltestingAustraliasFederalAirportCorporationrecommendedslagmaterialsbeusedfortheproject.Duringthedesignphasewhereassumptionofstructuralstabilityisrequiredtheslagpavementlayerwasconsideredtobeexiblealthoughcoresobtainedfromatrialpad20monthslaterexhibitedUnconnedCompressiveStrengthUCSresultsfrom6-10MPa.Theprojectwascompletedin1994andafter6yearsofserviceSydneyAirportCorporationreportedtheactualpavementdeectionsweresignicantlylowerthandesignandnosignicantpavementcrackinghasbeenobserved.ThethirdrunwayatSydneyAirportcontainsover250000tonneofslagblendandisstillperformingbeyonddesignexpectations.Sincecompletionofthe3rdrunwaySydneyAirportCorporationhaveutilisedafurther200000tonneofslagblendedroadbasematerialforseveralprojectsincludingtherecenttaxiwaywideningtoaccommodatetheAirbusA380.InthesouthernregionofNewSouthWalestheRoadsandTrafcAuthoritydesignsmanyboundpavementstohighwayloadingrequirements.TheASMSblendedslagroadbasecontaining80ABFSand20GBFSissuitablefortheseapplicationsandthisroadbasestabilisedwitha2binderhasbeenusedextensivelyintheregionforthepast10years.Duringthistimemorethan500000tonneofslagblendroadbasehasbeenusedinmajorroadprojectsincludingtheNorthKiamaby-passthePrincesHighwayre-alignmentatDunmoretheNorthernDistributorextensionthroughtoBulliandmorerecentlythePictonRoadsafetyupgrade.ManycouncilroadsrequiretheuseofexibleroadbasematerialsandtomeetthisneedASMSdevelopedslagbasaltblendsincorporatingbasaltnesfromlocalquarries.TheproductconformswithCouncilandNSWRoadsandTrafcAuthorityRTAspecicationsandovertheyearshasbeenusedbymanynearbycouncilsincludingWollongongWollondillyWingecarribeeShellharbourShoalhavenLiverpoolandCampbelltown.
