www.asa-inc.org.au02JAN11FirstinternationalmeetingofSlagAssociationsNewcasestudyonLowcarbonproductsopportunitiesintheEAFSsupplychainL-RKarenKigginsExecutiveDirectorNationalSlagAssociationUSANickJonesUKAndrewHayesDanCartwrightAUSatthe6thGlobalSlagConferenceandExhibitionSydneyNovember2010Withsomanyoverseasdelegatespresenttheopportunitywastakentoopenmoreformaldialoguebetweentheinternationalslagassociations-NationalSlagAssociationUSANipponSlagAssociationJapanEuroslagEUBrazilianSlagAssociationandAustralasianironsteelSlagAssociation.OthercountriessuchasKoreaIndiaandChinanothavingformalnetworkswereinvitedtojointhemeetingandsharetheirrespectiveviews.TheAustralasianironsteelSlagAssociationfacilitatedandhostedthemeeting.Thediscussionsandproposalsfocusedonsharingofinternationalproductionandutilisationdatagovernmentlegislationregulationandtechnicalrulechangesenvironmentchemistrytestingrequirementsandresearchactivities.Theaimsforthemeetingweresimple-rstlytoreconnectandstrengthenglobalandmutualinterestinallthingsironandsteelslagtoagreeonwaystoshareglobalexperiencesdeterminecommongroundwhereandhowwecansharetheseexperiencesgoodorbadlearnfromeachotherspositiveandnegativeoutcomesandlastlytogloballycoordinatebetteropportunitiestofurtherstrengthenourmutualinterest.Thosepresentwerekeenonstrengtheningtheinformalnetworkandexploringwaysofbuildingfurtherinternationalcooperation.Whilstthedecisionsatthismeetingarenotformallybindinganumberofaspirationalgoalswereestablished.Thosepresentundertooktoexplorethedevelopmentofaninternationalsurveytoolandcommonbaseforthecollationofinternationalstatistics.EachAssociationhasworkinggroupsthatcovertechnicalandeducationalobjectivesthegroupwillexplorehowappropriateinformationcanbesharedacrossthenetwork.Theoptimaluseofslagproductsisunderpinnedbysubstantialresearchwork.Anaimistoprepareasummaryofworldwideresearchcurrentandproposed.ItisalsoproposedtoformaninkindsecretariattosupportthenetworkwithAustralasianironsteelSlagAssociationofferingtotakeupthisresponsibilityfor2011and2012.Therearemanyconferenceseachyeardirectlyandindirectlyonironsteelslagproducts.TothisendtheaimistoprepareanInternationalConferenceCalendarprovidingarolling2-yearnoticeofupcomingevents.Givenglobalascenttothesegoalstheinformalnetworkwillbecomearealityfurtherunderpinningtheglobalslagproductsindustry.Severalnewlow-carbonproductopportunitieshavebeenidentiedduringan18monthexplorationofwaystoutiliseironandsteelslagISSinparticularElectricArcFurnaceSlagEAFS.TheAustralasianironandsteelSlagAssociationsASASustainableCapacityBuildingProgramcontributestowardstheASAsbroadaimsofincreasingtheeffectiveutilisationofEAFScurrentlyco-producedinVictoriansteelmills.TheprogramsupportedbySustainabilityVictoriasBusinessPartnershipsprogramanddeliveredinassociationwithLinkStrategyhasconductedaseriesofsupplychainworkshopswithindustrystakeholderstoraiseawarenessofthebenecialusesofISSandencourageanincreaseintheutilisationofthematerial.ParticipatingcompainesincludingproducersprocessorsandvalueaddersofthematerialrecognisedthatrealbenetswouldonlyaccruefromtheprogramiftheytackledthecomplexityofthesupplychainandchallengedoldassumptionsandpracticesabouttheutilisationofEAFS.TobenchmarkthecurrentknowledgeofEAFSasheldbytheparticipatingcompaniesanindustryefciencybenchmarkingreportwasdeveloped.ThereportanalysestheISSsupplychainfromthreeperspectivesenergyuseproductsandparticipantattitudestoissuesthatimpactoneffectiveutilisationofthematerialinVictoria.Participantsassessednewlow-carbonproductoptionsandtheirapplication.TheirresultingdiscussionshaveleadtothedevelopmentofacasestudythatfocusesonthepotentialusesofEAFSinroadconstructionapplication.ThiscasestudyfocusesontheenvironmentalbenetsarisingfromtheeffectiverecoveryanduseofEAFSwhichwouldotherwisemostlikelygotolandll.Casestudycanbedownloadedfromhttpwww.asa-inc.org.auDocASA-Low-carbo-product-opportunities-Single.pdfconnections
