The2012LondonOlympicsbroughtthebestathletesfromaroundtheworldtoaworld-classvenuetocompeteinfrontofcrowdsofthousands.DespitetheirconclusiontheinfrastructuresleftbehindhavealongerlastingeHectespeciallyintermsofthesustainablematerialsusedintheirconstruction.TheOlympicDeliveryAuthorityODAsetahighsustainabilitybenchmarkfortheconstructionanddevelopmentoftheOlympicParkandsuccessfullyproducedthemostenvironmentally-friendlyGamestheworldhasseen.TheODAsurpassedanumberoftargetsincludingthereductionofcarbonemissionsandembodiedcarbonheldwithinthesesuper-structuresbecomingahardacttofollowforfutureGames.ToillustratethesereductionsanumberofstatisticsareavailableAnaverageof32cementsubstitutionacrosstheparkwhichresultedinan11.6or14200tonneembodiedcarbonreduction.ThisFgurewouldhavebeenhigherifgroundgranulatedblastfurnaceslagGGBFSwaspromotedasthepreferredcementsubstituteoverGyashGGBFSaccountedfor24or29000tonneofcementsubstitutionthroughouttheParkGGBFSwasthepreferredsubstitutionmaterialforallvisiblefacesoftheinfrastructurebecauseofitslighterconcreteFnishincomparisontoconcretesubstitutedwithGyash.Thereforearangeof0-70GGBFSsubstitutionoccurredinvisibleconcretewithlevelsof36-40substitutionmorecommonwhenutilisedinwallsandcolumnswhichrequiredanearlystriketime.AlthoughslagisthemostcommonformofcementsubstitutionintheUKbecauseofitsfavourableaestheticcharacteristicsfurthersubstitutionamountscouldbefacilitatedwithfurtherindustrytestingandtrials.Thiswouldthenaidthedevelopmentofmorefavourableindustrypractices.Aspartofax1cLearningLegacyx1dtheODAhasproducedanumberofdocumentswhichoutlinetheinnovativemethodsandplanningmechanismsusedintheproject.Theseoperateasamethodofknowledgetransferforincorporationinfutureapplications.Theseareavailableonlinehttplearninglegacy.london2012.comindex.phpOriginallypublishedin1993andrevisedandrepublishedin2001theGuidetotheUseofSlaginRoadshasbeenanimportantpublicationculminatinginsome30yearsofresearchanddevelopmentworkonironandsteelslagsinroadtechnologyinAustralasia.Areasofparticularinteresthavebeeninpavementmaterialsdevelopmentandroadstabilisation.In2011theNationalTechnicalEducationCommitteeproposedtosupplementtheoriginalpublishedguidewithaseriesofQuickReferenceGuidesQRGx19sincorporatingandupdatingcurrentroadtechnologyinAustralasia.RelevantchangestoStateroadagencypracticesandrequirementsforironandsteelslaguseinpavementshavealsoprovidedlargescopefortheupdatingofresourcestoensureinformationiscurrent.Four4separateQRGx19sareplannedtobedevelopedandpublishedover20122013GeneralStabilisationSteelFurnaceSlagSFSElectricArcFurnaceSlagEAFSCurrentlyauthorsareworkingontheFrstofthesedocumentswhichwilloutlinethegeneralcharacteristicsofslagproductsespeciallythosewhichmakethemdesirableforuseinindustryapplications.Thisisexpectedforpublicationlaterthisyear.LondonOlympics2012LearningLegacyRoadsGuideReviewIntroducingtheQuickReferenceGuideTheNSWGovernmentisfundingthe62millionupgradeofthePrincessHighwayatSouthNowra.Bywideningtheexisting6.3kilometretwolanestretchtofourlanesbothtraIcGowandeIciencywillbeincreased.ThereforethisprojectwillbeimportanttofacilitatethecontinuedgrowthofbothlocalandholidaytraIctothisregionanditsSouthCoastneighbours.TheupgradehasbeenunderwayforseveralmonthswithmostworkscheduledtobecompletedbeforeChristmasofthisyear.Howeveritisexpectedthatcompletionwillnotoccuruntillate2013.Intermsofslaguse50ktofmodiFedblastfurnaceslagroadbaseproducedbyAustralianSteelMillServicesASMSwillberequiredfortheproject.ThismaterialhasbeenusedonNSWRMSprojectsintheIllawarraregionsince2002accountingformorethan250ktofnaturalmaterialreplacement.SouthNowraPrincessHighwayDuplicationwww.asa-inc.org.auconnectionsNovember1207
