www.asa-inc.org.au06connectionsMarch13InWhyallaSouthAustraliaArriumMiningsportexpansionprojectisclosetocompletionontheOneSteelWhyallaSteelworkssite.HoweverthisprojectalsoprovidessignicantreuseopportunitiesfortheSteelworksblastfurnaceslagasaprimeexampleofbenecialutilisationintheproducersownbackyard.ArriumMiningandOneSteelarebothkeybusinesseswithinArriumLimitedformerlyOneSteelLimitedwhichoperatestheintegrated1.2MTperannumSteelworksatWhyallaaswellasasuccessfulironoreexportbusiness.TheportexpansionwillincreasetheexportcapacityoftheWhyallaPortto13MTofironoreperyearopeninganumberofopportunitiesforincreasedsalesfromitsexistingironoreoperationsandthroughtheacquisitionoftheSouthernIronassetsnearCooberPedy.Theexpansionworksconsistsofatippocketusedtoin-loadtheironorefromtherailwagonsandtwolargeexportshedswhichareofsimilarsizeandappearancetotheexistingexportshedonthesite.TheothersignicantpartoftheexpansioninvolveslayingnewstandardandnarrowgaugeraillinkstoconnectthenewexportfacilitytotheSouthernIronminesiteandArriumsexistingSouthMiddlebackRangesmines.Anexpansiontothebusinesstranshippingoperationhasalsotakenplace.ThisincludedanadditionaltranshippingvesselgivingtheeetthecapabilitytoloadtwoCapevesselssimultaneously.AnewberthingfacilityisalsobeingconstructedintheSteelworksinnerharbour.Thecompletedprojectwillutilise3000tofsteelforthevariousbuildingsaswellas30kmof60kgrailand20000sleepersfortherailexpansion.AllofthissteelisbeingproducedbyOneSteeldomestically.DuetotheengineeringpropertiesofWhyallablastfurnaceslagover325000tofblastfurnaceslagwillhavebeenbeneciallyusedintheprojectbythetimeitiscompleted.Theslagisbeingusedasengineeringllbelowraillinesandasllforthenewberth.Inadditionthetippocketconveyortowersandthetwoexportshedshavebeenconstructedonlandthathasbeenreclaimedprogressivelywithblastfurnaceslagsincetheplantwasestablishedinthe1940s.TheWhyallaPortExpansioncommencedcommissioningoperationsinlate2012withthroughputbeingincreasedthroughouttheyear.Furtherdevelopmentworksarealsoplannedforcompletionduring2013.Forfurtherinformationpleasevisitwww.arrium.comWhyallaProject
