AswehaveseeninapreviousConnectionsstoryhttpwww.asa-inc.org.audocumentsASA_Connections_March_2013.pdfoverthepast20yearstheuseofsteelfurnaceslagSFSinasphalthasbecomewidelyacceptedparticularlyintheIllawarraSydneyandNewcastleregionsofNSWandmorerecentlyinMelbourneVICforasphaltapplications.Thisusewasbuiltonover30yearsofexperienceoverseasincludingtheUSUKandEuropewhereSFShasbeenwidelyusedandisacceptedasapremiumasphaltaggregate.CulminatingintheselocalandinternationalsuccessestheGuidetotheUseofSteelFurnaceSlaginAsphaltandThinBituminousSurfacingswaspublishedin1999whichwasthethirdinaseriesofpublicationstopromoteunderstandingandtheappropriateusageofslagbasedproducts.TotheseendstheAssociationenjoyedtheopportunitytoco-operatewithandreceivevaluableinputfromorganisationssuchastheRoadsandTracAuthorityNSWnowRMSVicRoadsandtheAustralianAsphaltPavementAssociationintheproductionandthepublicationoftheGuide.Fifteenyearsonthepopularityofsteelslagscontinuesforuseinroadblackspotsduetoitssuperiorskid-resistance.ThestorypublishedintheConnectionsMarch2013editionfocusedontheuseofElectricArcFurnaceslagEAFSbyAssociationmemberHarscoonroadsaroundtheMelbournearea.ThiseditionofConnectionsdelvesintotheuseofaslagproductonceagainforbenecialpurposesinkeyblackspotareasthroughoutSydneyNewSouthWales.RecentlyalongstretchofNewCanterburyRoadwasresurfacedwithasphaltcontaining10mmand14mmSFSaggregatecomplyingtoNSWRMSspecication3152.SFSaggregateswerechosenforacombinationofhighfrictionandanti-polishingpropertiesduetothisroadbeingregardedasanaccidentblackspotintheStanmorearea.The6000tonneofasphaltusedintheprojectcontainedover2000tonneofSFSaggregatessuppliedbyAssociationmemberAustralianSteelMillServicesASMSandcontinuesthelonghistoryofSFSusebyNSWroadsauthorityinareaswithhighmotorvehicleaccidentratestoimproveroadsafety.SeveralotherblackspotroadsinSydneyhavealsobeenresurfacedwithasphaltcontainingSFSaggregatesincludingKingGeorgesRoadHurstvilleandStaceyStreetBankstownbothutilisingmorethan2000tonneof10mmand14mmaggregateproducedfromBOSSFS.Theseprojectsfurtherdemonstrateboththesustainableandsafetybenetsofironandsteelslagmaterialstosupportthecontinuedusageofthisproductinroadapplications.ItsincreaseduseofSFSasavaluableindustrialbyproductinbituminoussurfacingswillresultinimprovedperformancefortheroaduserandownerandadecreaseinthedemandforourlimitednaturalresources.ASPHALTAGGREGATEFORUSEINSYDNEYBLACKSPOTSGOODNEWSSTORYAUSTRALIANSTEELMILLSERVICESwww.asa-inc.org.auconnectionsMarch1403
