MEMBEREMPLOYEEPROFILEDRJASONNAIRNJasonNairnhasrecentlyjoinedBoralCementasNationalTechnicalManager.Thisisakeyseniormanagementpositioninthecompanywhichsuppliescementitiousmaterialgroundgranulatedblastfurnaceslagyashlimelimestoneandawiderangeofconstructionmaterials.Jasonisresponsibleforadvisingonrelevantproductandprocesstechnologiesproductdevelopmentandliaisonwithindustryandmajorcustomers.WhatdoyouseeasthekeybeneftsthatcanbeobtainedbyusingGroundGranulatedBlastFurnaceSlagGGBFSasaSupplementaryCementitiousMaterialSCMinthemanuactureoconcreteIhavehadover25yearsofcontinuousinvolvementinthemanufactureoruseofslagsincegraduatingfromUniversity.AftercompletingmyundergraduatedegreeinMetallurgyatTheUniversityofQueenslandUQIhadtheopportunitytoworkwithMountIsaMinesMIMfrom1988to1991onoptimisingtheoperationofablastfurnacethroughimprovementsinthemanufactureofthesinterandresultantslag.Thiswasaco-operativeprojectbetweenSmeltingResearchMIMandPyrometallurgicalResearchUQ.Theprojectinvolvedbothon-siteexperimentalworkatMountIsaaswellasaresearchprogramatUQandwasofaninterdisciplinarynaturewithresearchbeingundertakeninmineralogyprocessmetallurgysolidicationcrystalgrowthandchemicalengineering.From1998to2003theQCLGroupofCompaniesnowpartofCementAustraliaemployedmeastheProductDevelopmentManagerwhereIwasresponsibleforthedevelopmentimplementationandmanagementofproductandprocessdevelopmentactivitiesthroughoutthegroup.ThisinvolvedinvestigationsintotheuseofGranulatedBlastFurnaceSlagGBFSinthemanufactureofGGBFSasanSCMforconcreteincludingworkwithAustralianSteelMillServicesASMSaimedatinvestigatingandimprovingthegranulationprocessandtheresultantgranulate.From2003to2007IwasemployedbySunstateCementLtdatacementmillingfacilityatFishermanIslandsWynnumastheProductionandTechnicalManagerresponsiblefortheProductionandLaboratoryDepartments.TheuseofGBFSwaskeytotheproductionofarangeofblendedcementsdevelopedforthemarketwithitsinclusioninGeneralBlendforgeneralconstructionLowHeatformassconcreteRoadBlendforstabilisationandSpecialPurposefordurableconcrete.From2012IworkedwithAECOMPtyLtdasaTechnicalDirectorintheroleofTeamLeaderfortheAdvancedMaterialsGroupinQueensland.Akeypartofthisrolewassupplyingconcretetechnicaladviceonrawmaterialsmixdesignsdurabilityplanningandconstructionmanagement.TheuseofGGBFSaspartofthecementitiousblendwascommonlyspeciedtoensurethatinfrastructuredesignedorconstructedmettherequireddurabilityrequirements.DuringmytimeatSunstateCementLtdIwasinvolvedwiththeASAandlookforwardtorejoiningthisinuentialindustrybodyandthesubsequentdiscussionsthatwillfollow.WhathasbeenyourinvolvementintheconstructionmaterialsindustryandexperiencewithslagTheuseofGroundGranulatedBlastFurnaceSlagGGBFSincementblendsprovidessignicantperformanceanddurabilityimprovementstoawiderangeofconcretematerialswhilealsoprovidingenvironmentalandeconomicbenets.ForexampletheGGFBSprovidescementblendswithalowerheatofhydrationwhichcanbeusedtoreducetheriskoflongtermdegradationfromDelayedEttringiteFormationDEFandcrackingbyreducingthepeakanddifferentialtemperaturesoccurringinearlyagecuringofmassconcrete.ConcreteformarineapplicationscontainingGGBFSalsohaveincreasedresistancetochlorideingressprovidingeffectiveandcostefcientlongtermprotectiontounderlyingreinforcement.www.asa-inc.org.au02connectionsNovember14 4QuickReferenceGuide32014SteelFurnaceSlagwithinitsworkingtimeisofcriticalimportancewhenboundpavementmaterialsareplacedinlayers.Workingtimeisnotsimplythetimewithinwhichthematerialsplacedareworkablebutratherthetimewithinwhichlayeringofboundpavementcanoccurwithoutriskofde-bondinglaminationorlossofultimatepavementstrength.ThenominatedworkingtimeisthelesservalueoftheMaximumDryDensityMDDandtheUnconnedCompressiveStrengthUCS.Layeringofboundpavementswithinrelevantmaterialworkingtimeswillstillrequiretheunderlyingsurfacetobescariednotproledormilledinsomeway.Thisisessentialtoremovethesmoothsurfacecreatedbyeithersmoothdrumrollingorrubbertyrepolishingcreatedbytruckstippingonthelowersurface.MoistureContentSlagblendedpavementsarelesssensitivetomoisturethanconventionalmaterials.UnboundSteelSlagPavementsSFScanbesuccessfullyutilisedinunsealedroadsandindustrialhardstandareas.ForunboundapplicationseachsiteorprojectshouldbereviewedtoensurethattheSFSusedistforpurposeforthegivenapplication.Constructionguidelinesshouldbeconsideredonasite-by-sitebasistoensureallrelevantsiteconditionsareaddressed.WhilstweatheringofSFSisundertakentolimitpotentialmaterialexpansionSFSmaynotbesuitableforuseinsomeapplications.SFScanbeplacedinlayersupto300mmthickalthoughformostunboundapplications150-200mmofmaterialisgenerallyadequate.PlacementConstructionjointsoccurwhereboundmaterialisplacedagainstpreviouslyplacedboundmaterialwhichisoutsidetheboundmaterialsworkingtime.Wherethisoccursacleancompactedverticalperpendicularsurfaceshouldbecuttothefulldepthofthepavementlayerthicknessforbothtransverseandlongitudinalconstructionjoints.Thiswillreducetheriskofplatingeectsonthepavement.Allspoilmaterialshouldbediscardedandnotincorporatedbackintotheworks.Duetotheirrigiditycracksoccurinboundpavements.TheriskofthisoccurringcanbereducedbymanagingthecorrectlocationofjointssuchasLimitingtheoverallpavementwidthsEnsuringjointsarenotinwheelpathsandEnsuringjointsinsub-baselayersareosettojointsinthebaselayer.ENVIRONMENTALCONSIDERATIONSSeveralcomprehensivestudiesofSFShaveshownthismaterialanditsleachatecontainstraceamountsofmetalwellbelowtriggerlevelsforenvironmentalinvestigation.TheprimaryenvironmentalriskwhenutilisingSFSinroadmakingapplicationsisthepotentialforalkalineleachatetoenterlocalwaterways.ThisriskisminimalwhenSFSisincorporatedintowell-designedandconstructedroadswithadequatedrainageanddecreasesovertimeasthematerialgainsstrength.HourstodaysofdirectstagnantcontactwithSFSarerequiredforthepHofwatertoreachenvironmentallysignicantlevels.WatersheetingoaroadorhardstandareaisnotincontactwithfreelimecontainedinSFSforalongenoughperiodtoproducehighpHrun-o.AnapproachtousingSFSaroundriversandstreamsistomaintaina5-10mbuereithersideofthenormalwaterwayowifunsureengineeringdesignisadequate.Beingaco-productofthesteelmanufacturingprocessexemptionshavebeengrantedforuseinroadmaking.SeeQRG1forfurtherinformation.CASESTUDIESCaseStudy1UnsealedRuralRoadatMistyLaneJamberooNSWMistyLaneisa2kmprivatelyownedandmaintainedruralroadlocatedinJamberooandusedby7properties.Thisprojectrequireda20x0mmSFSroadbaseitsmainfeaturebeingthattheslagproductwasusedtoachievealowtechnicalbuthighqualityoutcome.ItwasfoundthattherewerelittleobviousproblemswiththeSFSproductafterregularinspections.Asthematerialtooklongertohardenthesurfacewhichwasinitiallypliableallowedforloosestonetobeforcedintothesurfacewhichincreasedcompactionandsubsequentroadlifeforthelocalresidents.Figure1-Longitudinalconstructionjointing.Figure2-Transverseconstructionjoint.Figure3-SFSroadbaseusedatMistyLaneJamberoo. WouldyoubelieveitwaswellbeforethecommercialproductionofbluemetalfromtwoofAustraliasnowfamousquarryingareassitesbeingKiamaontheNSWSouthCoastandProspectHillsituatedwestofSydneyAdmittedlyitsasneakyquestionastheclueisinthewordcommercial.Toproduceironandtheresultantslagyoumusthaveironoreforitsironcontentcoalcokeorcharcoalasafuelandlimestonefortheux.Inearlycolonialdaysmineralswereusuallydiscoveredbyaccidentratherthandeliberateprospecting.ForexampletheBrokenHillsilverandleaddepositwasdiscoveredbyaboundaryriderwhotrippedonarockinthe1800s.In1833just50yearsafterCaptainPhillipbroughttheFirstFleetintoSydneyFarmSurveyorJacquesdiscoveredironstoneinaroadcuttingbeingexcavatedforacreekcrossingnearthepresenttownofMittagongintheNSWSouthernHighlands.Thestonecontained48ironcoalandlimestonewhichwerefoundnearbyandaCatalanfurnacewasbuiltatMittagongin1848.Heretherstironandslagco-productwereproducedinAustraliaalthoughnotincommercialquantities.ThiscamehalfacenturylaterinLithgowNSW.HistoryhasshownthatthroughaseriesoftakeoversthiscompanyisnowknownasBluescopeSteel.TheoriginalnameoftheMittagongplantwasIronstoneBridgeandin1851theFitzRoyIronMiningCompanywasformed.Interestinglyitsnameoriginatedfromavisittothesitein1850bytheNSWGovernorSirCharlesAugustusFitzroy.UnfortunatelylikesomanyoftheearlyattemptstoproduceironandsteelinthenewcolonylocalcompaniescouldnotcompetewiththecheaperironpigsimportedfromEnglandasballastfortheclippershipswhichcametotransportwoolandwheatfromAustralia.Thiswasinparttheresultofalackofimporttariffsinstitutedbythecolonialgovernmentatthetime.VerylittleremainsoftheFitzRoyIronWorksandthesitehasrecentlybeendevelopedintoalargesatelliteshoppingcentre.NexttimeyoutraveltheoldhighwayjustacoupleofkilometressouthofMittagongvisittheelevatedshoppingcomplex.Ofnoteisthatthegroundlevelcontainstheundercovercarparkinsteadofbeingsituatedbelowgroundtoensureconservationoftheheritagesite.AtthenorthernendyouwillndanareaofcarefullyrestoredhistoricalfoundationsfortheoriginalIronWorksincludingviewingareaslightingandinformationpanelsallofwhichensuretheartefactsarefullyprotectedfromtheweather.ThesiteiswellworthavisitasareminderofjustwhereAustraliasironandsteelindustrybegansomethingwetakeforgrantedtoday.DougProsserwasinaugural1990ExecutiveDirectoroftheAustralasianironsteelSlagAssociation.DougcontinueshispassionandinterestforallthingsironandsteelslagsATRIVIAQUESTIONWhenandwherewasthefrstironslagproducedinAustraliaTHEEARLIESTDAYSOFSLAGINAUSTRALIAwww.asa-inc.org.au06connectionsNovember14 AsSteelCementSCLapproachesits24thyearofoperationitistimelytoreectonwheretheindustryhasbeenandmoreimportantlywhereitwillbeinthenextfewyears.SteelCementwasapioneerintheproductionofgroundslagproductsdestinedforuseinconcretemasonryandcivilapplications.SteelCementrecognisedearlythebenetsofproducingneatmilledslagonaVerticalRollerMillVRMandpostblendingithasbeensuccessfulinpromotingthebenetsofSlagandofferingaslagsupplytotheentireVictorianindustry.TogetherwithitsparentcompanyIndependentCementLimePtyLtdICLanditstwomajorshareholdersAdelaideBrightonCementLtdABLandtheBarroGroupSteelCementhasledthewayinslagproductionanddistributioninthiscountry.Groundslagconsumptionhassteadilyincreasedinthevariousmarketsegmentsinoursupplychain.SupportfromVicRoadsConsultingEngineersandfromlocalGovernmentshasplayedavitalroleinincreasingtheapplicationofslagblendedcementsinconcretemasonryandroadstabilisation.SteelCementseesthisdemandtrendwillcontinueandwithamillingoperationlocatedjust3kmfromMelbournesCBDithasbeenwellpositionedtoservicethebuoyantgreaterMelbourneandVictorianmarket.HoweverwithpeakmonthlydemandnowoutstrippingmillcapacitySteelCementhasembarkeduponanewgrindingfacilitywhichwillseeitdoubleitscurrentoutputto.KeentoretainthebenetsofaVRManditsproximitytotheCBDandthePortSteelCementisconstructinganew60mgrindingplantandSCMterminalatYarravilleonlandwhichadjoinsthePortofMelbournethereforeensuringSteelCementcanmeetfuturedemandsfortheproduct.CommissioningforthenewplantisonscheduleforAugust2015.SteelCementPtyLtd60mUpgradeforSlagGrindingFacilityAskedaboutwhatisnewwiththeMillAlanDowSCsGeneralManagerreportedthatthereareanumberofefciencygainswiththenewplantdesignhowevertheprincipleoftheVRMremainsthesameasthecurrentMill-Customerscanthereforeexpectthesamelevelofqualityfromthenewfacility.InterestinglyonenotabledifferenceAlanwaspleasedtoaddwasthistimewehavebeenabletoincorporateslagintothemillfoundationtheoriginalfootingwasconstructedwithlimitedquantitiesofFlyAshasslagwasntavailablein1990.The1200cubicmetremillfoundationpouratYarravilleincorporateda35-65cementslagblendwhichisanidealapplicationforaconcretefoundationdemandingalowheatofhydration.Pleasefollowthelinktoviewthetimelapsevideooftherecentconcretepourhttpgoo.glh8wv57www.asa-inc.org.auconnectionsNovember1407 InSeptember2014ProjectLeaderProfessorStephenFosterUNSWannouncedduringthekickoffmeetingofindustrypartnersthattheCooperativeResearchCentreforLowCarbonLivinghadgrantedapprovalforthe3.1millionprojectoverthenextthree3yearsRP1004PerformanceBasedCriteriaforConcretes-CreatingPathwaysforLowCarbonConcreteManufacturewithExistingStandards.ProfFostersaidthisprojectisasignicantonebuildingonthefoundationsofourinitialprojectndingswhichneedtoaddressthecurrentgapsinStandardstoprovideclearpathwaysfordesignersandengineerstowardslowcarbonconcretes.InparticularthemajorprojectfocusesonalternativepathwaystothecarbonemissionsarisingfromthemanufactureofPortlandcementinAustraliawhichisestimatedaseightmilliontonnesyear.Industrialby-productssuchascoalcombustionproductsCCPsandironandsteelslagsISSwhicharenoteffectivelyutilisedcanpotentiallyreplaceasignicantamountofPortlandcementuseinconcretestructures.Themainbarrieridentiedbytheresearchcommitteetoutilisationoftheseby-productsisduetogapsinAustralianstandardswhichdonotrecogniseconcreteswithoutPortlandcement.ThisprojectwillexplorealternatepathwaysforlowcarbonconcretestobeusedwithexistingstandardsbydevelopingaperformancebasedcriteriaforconcretewhichmaynotcontainPortlandcement.CooperativeResearchCentreforLowCarbonLivingallocates3.1millionofprojectfundingfornextthreeyearstolowcarbonconcretesToviewmoreinformationontheProjectPartnerspleaseseelinksbelowSwinburneUniversityofTechnologyUniversityofNewSouthWalesAshDevelopmentAssociationofAustraliaAustralasianSlagAssociationIn2014theUniversityofQueenslandwasrecognisedforits32millionLivingBuildingwiththeawardofanEducationDesignv1ratingfromtheGreenBuildingCouncilofAustralia.TheGlobalChangeInstituteGCIbuildingcontains33precastoorbeamscontainingEarthFriendlyConcreteEFC.Withanareathatspans3865sqmHassellArchitectssoughttochallengetheparametersofsustainabilitytoensurethebuildingoperatesonnetzero-energyusingsolarpowerrainwaterstorageandtherstlow-carbonconcreteproducedintheworld.SpecicallyEarthFriendlyConcreteEFCwasdevelopedbyWagnersoveraperiodof8yearsandcomprisesnoPortlandCement.Insteadthisproductconsistsofsandaggregateyashgroundgranulatedblastfurnaceslagandactivatorchemicalsandadmixtures.Whilsttherearetheobviousenvironmentalbenetsofusingthisconcreteitalsoprovideshighlevelsofperformancewithhighresistancetosulphateattackchlorideingressandlowshrinkage.Thisinnovativeprojectwasalsorecognisedatthe2013BPNSustainabilityAwards.ImportantlyWagnersarealsoin-kindcontributorstotheCooperativeResearchCentreforLowCarbonLivingworkingwiththeAssociationonourlowcarbonconcreteproject.ProjectReportUQLivingBuildingwww.asa-inc.org.au08connectionsNovember14
