Welcome to the 2005 Australasian (iron & steel) Slag Association conference CD proceedings. This conference was the fourth event conducted in the Associations 15 year history. The conference papers covered a wide range of topics addressing the use of iron & steel slag materials. The goal for the conference was two fold, firstly to communicate findings of the Association research & development activities over the past 3 years to members. Secondly, to disseminate information about the associations activities to a broader audience of people involved in the construction industry including designers, engineers, specifiers, educators, local, state and federal government policy makers and those interested in durability of structures, greenhouse gas reduction initiatives and resource conservation.
A special report will be given by the University of Wollongong cross discipline Higher Education Workplace Skills Olympiad (HEWSO) Team – Joint finalists and runners up in the National 2004 Competition. See the results of a young team tackling a real business situation – “Investigation of the opportunities to use or recycle iron and steel slag products taking into consideration market activities, environmental issues and community attitudes”.
We gratefully acknowledge the support of our members, in particular the organising committee of Simon Hodsden (MultiServ), Norm Clifford (Steelstone Service), David E Jones (Damaur Holdings), Shani Smith (Australia Steel Mill Services) and Paul Horowitz (HBM Group). Our special thanks go our sponsors, for without their support these events could not proceed. And lastly, our sincere thanks to our speakers and presenters for their participation, which lead to a successful event.
