Culminatingaftermorethan12monthsofconsultationtestinganddatacollectionwithgeneratorprocessorsofelectricfurnaceladleslagLFSandOEHNSWtheAssociationhassecuredanexemption.Theexemptionprovideslegalcertaintyaroundtheconditionsunderwhichelectricfurnaceladleslagcanbeusedinconstructionandotherprojects.CraigHeidrichExecutiveDirectoroftheASAsaidx1cTheAssociationandOPceofEnvironmentandHeritageshareacommonobjectiveinencouragingresourcerecoveryofmaterialswhichotherwisewouldbeplacedinunproductivelandMllx13resultinginpoorresourceconservationoutcomesx1d.x1cSettingtheexpectedpropertiesandgeneralconditionsofusebringsassurancetotheusersproducersandindeedthecommunityallowingthematerialtobeusedappropriately.LadleFurnaceSlagLFSexemptionMembersinparticulargeneratorshaveprovidedasigniMcantamountofmaterialandtestingsupporttounderpinthegeneralexemptiondata.WorkingcloselywiththeAssociationsExecutiveDirectorandstaOx13theoutcomeswereanexcellentexampleofx18Doingtogetherwhatwecouldnotdoalonex19.AcopyofthegeneralexemptionisavailablefromtheOEHwebsitehttpwww.environment.nsw.gov.auwastegeneralRRE.htmThereisalongandenduringrelationshipbetweentheNationalSlagAssociationNSAandtheAustralianSteelandSlagProcessingindustries.Thisrelationshipwasformedintheearlypartofthe1960x19swhenthesteelworksparticularlyinPortKemblawaslookingatthefutureofincreasingproductionandashortageofopportunitiesfortheuseofironandsteelslags.Thisenduringrelationshiphasbeenoneofmutualsupportindevelopingconferencesandsharingresearchresources.InitiallydevelopedwiththeAustralianSteelindustryithasbeencarriedforwardthroughtheAustralasianironsteelSlagAssociationASAsinceitsformationin1990.ASAx19sExecutiveDirectorCraigHeidrichmetwithNSAmemberswhilstinDetroiton5May2011whenattendingvariousmeetingswithWiOSSnetworkmembersandtheAmericanConcreteInstitute.NSAmemberswereupdatedonlegislativedevelopmentswithinAustraliainparticulargeneralexemptionsgrantedbyOEHNewSouthWalesfortheuseofblastfurnaceslagBFSsteelfurnaceslagSFSelectricarcfurnaceslagEAFSandmostrecentlyladlefurnaceslagLFS.Countryproductiondataslagutilisationandmarketoptionsforslagusewerediscussed.NSAmembersprovidedanupdateonamajorEcoToxreportintotheofslaginconstructionapplications.ThereportwasexpectedtobeMnalisedinlate2011.ThismutualsharingofinformationhasbeenofgreatbeneMtandhadbeneMtedbothAssociations.NationalSlagAssociationUSASteelStewardshipForumwww.asa-inc.org.au02connectionsNOVEMBER11ElectrivexaarcxafurncaexaladlexaslagTheForumwasinitiatedbyAustraliaSteelInstituteBHPBillitonBluescopeSteelTheCrucibleEcofuturesGHDGreenBuildingCouncilAustraliaOneSteelRioTintoandWWFAustralia-inassociationwiththeAustralianGovernmentDRETEdenProjectUKandWorldSteelAssociation.Theforumobjectiveswhilstdevelopedin2008providetimelyfocusonbuildingastrongAustraliansteelmanufacturingindustrynamelyTomaximisethevalueofsteeltosocietywhileminimisingnegativecommercialsocialandenvironmentalimpactsacrossthelifecycleToensurepolicymakersgovernmentsandthepublicgenerallyareawareofthevalueofsteelTounitekeystakeholdersalongthesteelproductlifecyclechainwithinastructuredforumToworkasahublinkinginformationknowledgeleadingpracticeandactivityintheareasofenvironmentalimprovementandsustainabilityacrossthesteellifecycle.AcatalystfortheforumformationwastheAPECMinistersResponsibleforMiningmeetingheldinFebruary2007.TheminstersbelievetheSteelstewardshipwouldmakeapositivecontributiontoglobalsustainabilityissuesforthesteelindustry.Formationworkbegunquicklyover2008and2009includingissueswithstructuremembershipandfunding.Ideasgeneratedduringtheforumworkshopsleadtoprogressingtwoprojectsandaftersecuringfundingoverthecourseof2010theseprojectscommencedin2011.SteelCertifcationProjectTobeknownasx18ResponsibleSteelx19-developingaclearmeasurableenvironmentalcertiMcationprocessacrossthewholeofthesteelsupplychainfromminingtoscraprecoveryandmeasuringprogressinenvironmentalimprovementagainstasetofagreedbenchmarks.TobeusedascriteriaforthesupplyofsteelproductsintotheAustralianmarket.SteelChainFootprintProjectahighlevelInput-outputmappingoftheAustraliansteelchaintohighlightwhichareasofthesteelvaluechaincontributemostinkeyinputsoutputsrelativetoresourceuseandemissionswasteandtoidentifycurrentmanagementprogramsandenvironmentalareasofopportunitythatdeservefurthersectoralattentionbytheSSFoutsideofwhatspeciMccompanyx19smaybeabletoundertake.TheASAwasinvitedtobecomemembersoftheforumin2010primarilytocontributeourcollectiveindustrysupplychainknowledgeontheproductionprocessinganduseofironandsteelslags.CraigHeidrichExecutiveDirectorfortheassociationsaidx18publisheddataontheenvironmentalbeneMtsoOsettingofemissionsbydisplacingnaturaloremissionintensivematerialsarisethroughtheproductiveuseofironandsteelslagwillbeourmaincontributionsx19.Formoreinformationpleasevisitwww.steelstewardship.com
