InSeptember2014ProjectLeaderProfessorStephenFosterUNSWannouncedduringthekickoffmeetingofindustrypartnersthattheCooperativeResearchCentreforLowCarbonLivinghadgrantedapprovalforthe3.1millionprojectoverthenextthree3yearsRP1004PerformanceBasedCriteriaforConcretes-CreatingPathwaysforLowCarbonConcreteManufacturewithExistingStandards.ProfFostersaidthisprojectisasignicantonebuildingonthefoundationsofourinitialprojectndingswhichneedtoaddressthecurrentgapsinStandardstoprovideclearpathwaysfordesignersandengineerstowardslowcarbonconcretes.InparticularthemajorprojectfocusesonalternativepathwaystothecarbonemissionsarisingfromthemanufactureofPortlandcementinAustraliawhichisestimatedaseightmilliontonnesyear.Industrialby-productssuchascoalcombustionproductsCCPsandironandsteelslagsISSwhicharenoteffectivelyutilisedcanpotentiallyreplaceasignicantamountofPortlandcementuseinconcretestructures.Themainbarrieridentiedbytheresearchcommitteetoutilisationoftheseby-productsisduetogapsinAustralianstandardswhichdonotrecogniseconcreteswithoutPortlandcement.ThisprojectwillexplorealternatepathwaysforlowcarbonconcretestobeusedwithexistingstandardsbydevelopingaperformancebasedcriteriaforconcretewhichmaynotcontainPortlandcement.CooperativeResearchCentreforLowCarbonLivingallocates3.1millionofprojectfundingfornextthreeyearstolowcarbonconcretesToviewmoreinformationontheProjectPartnerspleaseseelinksbelowSwinburneUniversityofTechnologyUniversityofNewSouthWalesAshDevelopmentAssociationofAustraliaAustralasianSlagAssociationIn2014theUniversityofQueenslandwasrecognisedforits32millionLivingBuildingwiththeawardofanEducationDesignv1ratingfromtheGreenBuildingCouncilofAustralia.TheGlobalChangeInstituteGCIbuildingcontains33precastoorbeamscontainingEarthFriendlyConcreteEFC.Withanareathatspans3865sqmHassellArchitectssoughttochallengetheparametersofsustainabilitytoensurethebuildingoperatesonnetzero-energyusingsolarpowerrainwaterstorageandtherstlow-carbonconcreteproducedintheworld.SpecicallyEarthFriendlyConcreteEFCwasdevelopedbyWagnersoveraperiodof8yearsandcomprisesnoPortlandCement.Insteadthisproductconsistsofsandaggregateyashgroundgranulatedblastfurnaceslagandactivatorchemicalsandadmixtures.Whilsttherearetheobviousenvironmentalbenetsofusingthisconcreteitalsoprovideshighlevelsofperformancewithhighresistancetosulphateattackchlorideingressandlowshrinkage.Thisinnovativeprojectwasalsorecognisedatthe2013BPNSustainabilityAwards.ImportantlyWagnersarealsoin-kindcontributorstotheCooperativeResearchCentreforLowCarbonLivingworkingwiththeAssociationonourlowcarbonconcreteproject.ProjectReportUQLivingBuildingwww.asa-inc.org.au08connectionsNovember14
