2019 marks the 60th year of Bis operating in Whyalla, South Australia.

Current and former employees, community leaders and customers of leading specialised production services company Bis have gathered together in Whyalla to celebrate the company’s 60th year of operating in the important South Australian town.

Since 1959, the company has continuously provided logistics and materials handling support for the GFG Alliance and its predecessor companies at the iconic Whyalla Steelworks. Over the last 60 years, Bis has also delivered critical infrastructure projects including the construction of roads, pipelines and jetties in Whyalla.

Bis Chief Executive Brad Rogers said the company employed 240 people in Whyalla and the celebrations were also an opportunity to honour the special relationship Bis has with the town.

“Bis is Whyalla proud. Our people are part of the community. They live here, shop here, play sport here, our employee’s children are born here and go to school here. Multiple generations of local families have worked for us and that proud tradition continues today,” Mr Rogers said.

“Over the last 60 years we have also demonstrated an ability to listen to our customers, understand their business and deliver tailored, effective and efficient supply chain solutions.”

Mr Rogers highlighted the recent award of a contract by GFG Alliance, making Bis the single materials handling contractor for the company’s Whyalla steel making operations.

The contract kicked off at the start of October and sees Bis deliver a range of site services to the Whyalla site including steel services, scrap processing and handling, slag processing and handling and bulk materials handling.

The contract brought 80 new team members to the business to deliver the expanded scope of works.

Mr Rogers said the continued strength of the company in Whyalla could be traced back to the early days of its presence in the town.

“What’s happening for Bis right now in 2019 is in part testament to the hard work, experience and ingenuity which have been a hallmark of our business here since 1959.”
